Toward the end of WWII, Henry Fonda’s Mister Roberts longs to fight in the shooting war. But he’s stuck with surly Captain James Cagney, sailing from tedium to apathy. Roberts, like the antsy crew, is itching for something different. Something like…a liberty! This male-oriented yarn focuses on bored guys who need a break, even from this backwater where nothing dangerous happens and the only war they fight is with their captain. Roberts keeps bugging the captain for a transfer, even though he knows this annoys his superior. But the two make a deal, and the men get their liberty. Even though Roberts delights in their delight, the compromise comes at considerable cost for him.
