The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run is the world’s oldest 100-mile trail race. Starting in Squaw Valley, California near the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics and ending 100.2 miles later in Auburn, California, Western States, in the decades since its inception in 1974, has come to represent one of the ultimate endurance tests in the world.

At the time of this writing there were 369 entries in this internationally recognized challenge in which 80 of the runners are female and 289 male. They represent 26 countries and 38 US states. Seven runners are from Auburn.

In Foresthill at the 60-mile point, runners emerge from the trail on Bath Rd and head up to Foresthill Rd. They then proceed to run on the trail next to the road down to the Old Foresthill Elementary School (Arts Center) parking lot where an aid station is located. Frontrunners begin arriveing as early as 2:30 pm. They continue to arrive after dark and have to reach Foresthill by midnight to remain in the running.

After the aid station, runners proceed down Main St to California St where they make a left, then a right on Lowe St which dead ends at Mosquito Ridge Rd. Runners cross Mosquito Ridge Rd and then continue on the WS trail through the Middle Fork canyon in Auburn State Recreation Area to Auburn and Placer High School for the finish.

Everyone is welcome to position themselves along Main Street to cheer on the runners as they pass through Foresthill.

There is another aid station located at the easterly end of Foresthill Road at Robinson Flat. Parking is limited and there are shuttle buses with traffic and parking control beginning at Sailor Flat on Foresthill Rd. Frontrunners start to arrive at about 9:30 am. All runners have to be through this checkpoint by 1:50 pm to continue on.
