Gary and Luana are on a mission to help keep the residents of Foresthill as safe as they can thru the NFPA FireWise USA Program. The program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. Nationally there are over 1,500 recognized Firewise USA sites taking action and ownership in preparing and protecting their homes against the threat of wildfire.

Both Luana and Gary worked very closely with the Monte Verde Estates (MVE) HOA providing direction and support in the certification process. They worked closely with Michael Whittle, MVE Firewise Chairman, which enabled MVE to become the first Firewise community on the Divide. At present, there are around one dozen communities either certified or working on certification in the Foresthill area.

Firewise communities can range in size from eight individual single family dwelling units to a maximum of 2,500. Here in Foresthill the range goes from eight homes with an upcoming Firewise community of around one hundred. You can learn more by attending the Fire Safe Council meeting held every third Tuesday of the month, 5:30pm, at the FH Fire Department office, 24320 Main Street.
