Ella Surratt died on Sunday, April 26, at her home in Foresthill, CA aged 103.  Born in 1916 in Waskom, TX, Ella was raised by her Uncle Cannon and Aunt Ella in Woodson, AR and married Howard Surratt in 1932.  Their first child was born the following year in 1933; they had a total of ten children with their youngest born in 1953.

Like many African Americans after WWII, they migrated from the Jim Crow south and took their young family to Foresthill, CA in 1946.

Ella and Howard were long time members of Calvary Bible Church and her grandson Steven is the current pastor of the congregation.

She and Howard were also charter members of the Foresthill Safety Club Ambulance Service and Rescue Team.  Ella worked in the cafeteria for many years at the Foresthill Elementary School and each of her ten children attended Placer High School in Auburn.

A devout Christian, Ella offered thanks to God for each day of her life.

Her unconditional love for everyone she met made her well known and much loved for many years in the Foresthill community.

She and Howard were married for almost 65 years; he precedes her in death as do three of her ten children, Velma, Faye and Ted.  She is survived by her remaining 7 children, 23 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will take place in Foresthill in the coming weeks once restrictions due to Covid19 are lifted.
