Foresthill FFA Natural Resource Team

Wins the State Championship!

On January 25, 2021, four members of the Foresthill FFA team competed “virtually” in the FFA Natural Resource Career Development Events (CDE) State Championships, hosted by Reedley College. The team of David Reinhart, Clay Cantrell, Sloan Farinha, and Kelly Cantrell, won first place in the State Competition! This will secure a spot for them in the National Environment and Natural Resource CDE Competition at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis next Fall.

The team met at Foresthill High School on a Saturday morning and competed in online tests in various areas - Animal Identification, Plant Identification, Natural History of California Knowledge, and a Skills Test that covered such topics as range forage calculations, topographic map reading, and dendrology.

The team also was given a scenario wherein they had to develop a presentation. The topic at this event required them to come up with a way to make a farm--which consisted of dairy cattle, annual crops, rangeland, and a forest plot--that is very energy-efficient and sustainable. The team had 30 minutes to prepare their presentation before showcasing it to a panel of judges via Zoom. The team earned first place in the oral presentation!

The final team score was based on each member’s individual score for each test, as well as the team score on the oral presentation. Individually, they all did great. Clay Cantrell placed 1st overall, David Reinhart earned 5th place, Kelly Cantrell placed 6th, and Sloan Farinha earned 13th place in the State!!

This win is extra special because this is only the second year that this team has competed in this event. Last year was a learning experience, so this year they came back motivated and ready to win. They competed in four practice events prior to the State Championship and also hosted an event for other teams.

The team will take a well-deserved break before they begin studying for the Forestry CDE Competition. They will also need to begin fundraising for the National Championships soon, so please be on the lookout for future fundraisers and consider helping to support their efforts!
