This week we celebrate all that we love about America. Most years, there have been parades, fireworks, speeches, and family BBQ’s. Contestants squared up in the annual Hot Dog Eating contest, and veterans marched down Main Street reminding us of the cost of America’s Liberty. This year … who knows. Covid has changed our lives forever.
Our national celebration should cause Christians to reflect on the source of our freedom, and the support that is necessary to uphold it. And I say with vigor, without Faith, Freedom fails.
John Adams, our nation’s second president is quoted as saying, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.”
It can hardly be disputed that faith has been diminishing in our nation since the early 1960's. A national defiance against God has put a symbolic banner over our nation that says, “God Not Welcome.”
This loss of faith has devastating consequences for freedom, for faith is the only foundation that can uphold freedom. Without faith, our freedoms are misused as opportunities to take advantage of the weak, or to steal from our neighbors.
The Loss of FREEDOM can already be seen, especially economic freedom. The national debt continues to balloon out of control, jeopardizing future generations of Americans. In October 2008 our national debt was $9.7 trillion, about $31,700 per person. Today it is 30 trillion ($100K per person).
We have become a nation of users. People are discovering that it is easier to receive public benefits than it is to work. Benjamin Franklin once said, “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic”
Margaret Thatcher said about European socialism, “The problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money”
And John Adams states “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by sword, the other is by debt”.
But this slothful dependence on one’s neighbors violates the commands of Scripture. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 states, “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.””
We have a nation divided against itself. People who produce are pitted as the enemy. Those who refuse to work make greater and greater demands against those who earn a living. We need God back in America!
George Washington. “It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible”
Patrick Henry. “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was grounded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.”
John Jay, a first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court states, “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
Noah Webster wrote, “Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for yourselves rulers, ‘men who rule in the fear of God.’ If the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office the government will soon be corrupted, laws will be made, not for the public good, so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the DIVINE commands and elect bad people to make and administer the laws.”
