This year I resolve to ... Guess what, it's that time of year again! The time when we make our New Year's resolutions – promises, promises, promises. Think about how many of us have made a New year’s resolution in the past and haven’t kept it?

Think of some of the promises we make at this time of year.

Can anyone guess what the #1 New Year’s resolution is? - I resolve to lose weight and get into shape … You sign up for the gym, buy the latest lose weight plan and you are ready to go. It is New year’s eve … 11:59pm. Chips, soda, cakes, nuts, you name it scattered everywhere. In your mouth is a Snickers bar and your are wolfing that baby down for come midnight, the promise begins. Spin the clock ahead … 7:00am, New year’s morning … the only thought in your mind, “what am I going to do with the leftovers”. And so begins the fall!

I promise to quit smoking. Picture this … December 31st 11:59pm … a bucket of cigarrete butts sit next to you. You’ve smoked a whole carton today alone! And you are puffing on the last one. Spin the clock forward … 7:00am New Year’s morning. What have I done? Then the shakes. The stores are closed so you do the next best thing, pick through the bucket of butts and start ripping out the last bit of tobacco in each. You roll it in the comics section of the newspaper and away we go.

Spend more time with the kids, take better care of myself, go on a trip, get a new job, drink less alcohol, reduce stress, stop being mean to my wife and my kids, stop hating other people, or maybe it is to support my church with my time, talents, and resource, to love all as God loves me.

We are so good at making promises and yet so poor at keeping them! Makes you feel like you are a loser doesn’t it? Everytime I try to do it right, I blow it. Sound familiar? I am such a loser. I just can’t get it right.

Which brings us to God. One thing we will find in the Bible is God’s promise fulfilled, everytime, all the time!

From Isaiah, God makes this promise, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Did God keep His promise to send Jesus? A SON! He promised us a son, a human son, one of us - flesh and blood .... true God and true man … the ultimate servant to our sinful society. A human and God to save us.

And then he made the ultimate promise. We see that in Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Did God Keep His promise?

Oh yes, by His grace we are delivered for eternity! And this is his promise unraveled for us for today just as it was then … I promise all of you. This child, this is My Son, Me!. Believe in Him, believe in Me. Believe that He was born to save the world and died to save you. Believe in Him and you will live with me forever, I promise. And that promise, my brother and sisters in Christ is written throughout the Word He gave us … if you believe, you will be saved. Promises … all fulfilled.

Please join us each Sunday to hear more of God’s Word and how it points to a promise of eternal life to all who believe. Worship is at 9:30 am every week. All are welcome so please come as you are.
